Although I am unable to be home in Halifax, Nova Scotia at this time I send this message with love and joy in my heart. Uncle Billy was a kind, loving protector of family and friends. One of the first and most memorable moments I recall of my uncle Billy was when I was 9 years old and he gave me my first ever radio, a very big deal at the time. I can recall the times in our youth when me and my brothers and sisters would go triker-treating he always made sure to call my mother to make sure she knew we were safe. And even as I grew and became a teenager and adult he remained a true guardian. Always ensuring when I took the VIA Rail train from Halifax to Toronto that the conductor made an extra effort to ensure I was safe and cared for. Deborah, Donna, and Denise I want you to know I am thinking of you and keeping you in prayer. My love.

In May 2010, Billy Downey, owner of the former Arrow’s Club, holds a photo himself and singer Billy Martin, an act that he says started it all for Halifax’s first black club, which ran from 1962-1979. Funeral services for Downey, who died last week will be held Saturday. (TIM KROCHAK / Staff)

Ardith & Graham Downey’s 1st Born Grandson and Great Nephew of the Late Billy Downey
During the holidays two years ago I remember Uncle Billy recalling a story of his youth. He told the room full of youngsters and old-timers about the times when he would ride with his father into the South End of Halifax to sell coal and wood in the market. He recalled vivid memories of the illicit hurtful words of prejudice and threats that would sling their way openly in 1940’s Halifax. However he said they always proceeded undeterred and unafraid no matter how difficult it was. The lesson in his story was quite simple. “You have to have the courage to rise above and see the good in the heart of every person”, a message embodied in the success and story of the Maritime Junior Baseball Team known as the Boy’s of 1962.

My heart is with my cousins, Deborah, Donna, and Denise during this time. I loved your father very much his presence was always comforting and the energy he brought with him always lifted and brighten the mood. Uncle Billy was my grandfather’s best friend, brother, business partner, confidant, and right hand man. The two of them are kindred souls each one attached not being complete without the other. I write this message from my current home in Ottawa; however my heart and true home will forever remain at 2047 Creighton Street. Nanny, Papa, I will be home soon please take comfort knowing that Uncle Billy’s memory, legacy and spirit burns bright and deep within me here in our Nation’s Capital.
Sincerely with love,
Carmella, Jerome & Family
