In my personal opinion and experience even still today here in Canada, I find most police officers or “peace officers” still use excessive tactics of intimidation and force. I think this alienates the core rights and freedoms that are supposed to be protected under the law.
I fundamentally believe individual human rights and freedoms are worth fighting to protect, and even though institutional racism is a reality I choose NOT to turn a blind eye but instead work towards a modern solution that focuses on the self, because the system will not do it for us.
At the core of this philosophy to overcoming racism, poverty, and economic inequality are two main principles or concepts Economic Independence and the sustained idea within society of the right to Self Determination. Now this is not a radical idea however within many modern corporate/government cultures these characteristics are discouraged and hold the true potential of ones self hostage to bureaucracy and laws that are arbitrarily biased in favor of special interest. I have seen the failure of these polices meant to support and uplift the African Nova Scotia Black Community. I can say with confidence that over the next decade there will be a significant change and mobilization of a generation they called “Y”.
In 10 years time my generation will be between the ages of 35-40, a reality that is tough to imagine but true non the less. As a result significant changes will be coming. The demographic shift will affect government policy, and private sector business interest. In the end change is not an option but a necessity of life and life to me is only worth living when we are all thriving not just a few. Let us be the change and learn from the lessons of our past, without allowing our past to define our future let us have an open mind.
