In business and specially in accounting you have to track everything. First and most fundamental is tracking your Debits & Credits vs Account Type, click the link to get a basic overview of this principle. Inspired by this basic principle it got me thinking about the balance sheet of my day, and how positive or negative it might be? and how I can answer a simple question with complete honesty and statistical evidence.
Everyday presents a new wave of emotion that comes from our every day activities and life events. Constantly connected to our smart phones it is difficult to accurately process and respond to information, and complete desired task. (Twitter, Facebook, Email, RSS Feeds, etc.. get in the way of “Getting Things Done” (#GTD), so I developed a new end of the day activity to help accurately determine how good my day actually was.
So here is my new system to give a more accurate response when asked;
How good was your day? (#hgwyd); How good was your day actually? (#hgwyda)
Example Below:
Good News or Events is (+) & Bad News or Events is (-)
“Learning a new skill (+), “Finding $5 on the ground (+) — “Missed email response (-)”
= +1 (hgwyda)
Equation: (+ News) – (- News) =#hgwyda
{* There is a daily maximum of only 16 points per day. (+) positive or (-) negative. A point for each hour based on how you feel and the general productivity of your time.}
The traditional way of tracking the success of a day is in how many lines we struck through our To Do List. I think that in this fast paced mobile business landscape that way of doing things is still very affective, and works for many. However it i, ridged and almost unrealistic when juggling many things at once and task delegation is unreliable. If you have 6 things on your To Do List and only get to 1, is it bad time management? or the reality of just being that busy/distracted from information overload and demands on your time? I think it is fair to say it is a combination of both however your not going to win the Things To do war in one day.
By putting a score to your day you can visualize and remind yourself of your success, and document to find the negatives that can be improved. You will have some wild card events positive and negative that are out of your control, you will sometimes not even meet your expectations or standards, but that’s OK it’s just life. Just document it and continue to roll on, because after all tomorrow is a brand new day, with a clean slate and new score.
