Analytica Advisors: Open Letter Canadian Cleantech Sector

Dear Jerome,

Last week the Globe and Mail reported that Mark Carney, in his final speech as Governor of the Bank of Canada, said that faster economic growth will depend on business investment and export growth. He stated that exports should be $130 billion higher now if the trajectory of previous recessions is a guide, and that the central bank expects business investment to remain below average.investment to remain below average.

CleanTech

In the previous Spotlight on Cleantech we discussed the contributions of small and medium-sized enterprises to  as was the case before the disappearance of liquidity during the global financial crisis and the loss of more than 10 years of export gains by SMEs, including rising exports during the appreciation of the Canadian dollar starting in 2003.Canada’s exports. Canadian SMEs have proven that they can deliver $84 billion on non-resources exports annually [i]

Canadian clean technology companies are accomplished exporters, with 48% of industry revenues being derived from exports and 44% of these exports being to countries other than the US.  Estimated exports for the clean technology industry were $5.2 billion in 2011, approximately 9% of 2010 SME non-resources-related exports. We forecast that the industry will deliver between $10.6 and $17.5 billion in exports by 2015, a doubling or tripling of 2011 exports. Continue reading

3M CEO On Innovation

George Buckley On innovation

Facing economic challenges in the West, the chief executive of 3M looks to emerging markets for new opportunities and more scientists.

What is innovation acording to Wikipedia ?

innovation and econInnovation is the development of new customers value through solutions that meet new needs, inarticulate needs, or old customer and market needs in value adding new ways. This is accomplished through more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas that are readily available to markets, governments, and society. Innovation differs from invention in that innovation refers to the use of a better and, as a result, novel idea or method, whereas invention refers more directly to the creation of the idea or method itself. Innovation differs from improvement in that innovation refers to the notion of doing something different (Lat. innovare: “to change”) rather than doing the same thing better.

Let’s Talk About What We Are Fighting For

“In a world darkened by ethnic conflicts that tear nations apart, Canada stands as a model of how people of different cultures can live and work together in peace, prosperity, and mutual respect.” – Bill Clinton

The Cause Is What Is Important

The story dominating headlines  early this week in Canadian politics was Liberal MP Justin Trudeau’s victory in the boxing ring. Proving the odds makers wrong he beat up a younger perceived “stronger” opponent in Senator Patrick Brazeau. Justin had no need to rope-a-dope, as I had assumed might be his strategy. Instead the match was settled by a TKO in the 3rd round. Although the showmanship and games grabbed the headlines the cause it was for was very important.

The boxing match between Trudeau and Brazeau started to make me think about what we are fighting for as a country.  As individuals we all have our own unique interest, motivations, influences, dreams and ambitions that we fight for. We work towards our dreams because we were taught by our parents, mentors and heroes that our dreams could and would come true and to not let anyone stand in our way. From a political observer’s position this logic is clearly something that has been a rallying point amongst the Conservative Party of Canada. In 2011, after several minority parliaments, Canadians decided to elect what they were told was going to be a “a strong, majority, conservative, government” that would lead us through the economic crisis. Top Documentary: Here Comes The Sun

“Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.” Buddha

It has become self-evident in my inner circle and for those around me at work that I have become extremely passionate about the Clean Technology sector. My rational behind this is very simple; it represents a different way of thinking and seeing the world. It represents unity, balance, and sustainability. These are principles that I believe are fundamental to a healthy lifestyle. In my last Top Documentary Selection: There Is No Tomorrow there was a lot of fear and facts used to suggest that our future here on earth was very bleak. The quotes below from friends and family are a sample of first reactions after seeing the video.

The most important and impressive thing about The Funding Portal is how they are organized. The Energy Sector & Clean Tech Ecosystem

What is the Energy Sector ?

The Energy Sector is a category of stocks that relates to producing or supplying energy. This sector includes companies involvedin the exploration and development of oil or gas reserves, oil and gas drilling, or integrated power firms.

Investopedia explains the ‘Energy Sector’

Performance in the sector is largely driven by the supply and demand for worldwide energy. Energy producers will do very well during times of high oil and gas prices, but will earn less when the value of energy drops. Furthermore, this sector is sensitive to political events, which historically have driven changes in the price of oil.
